Case Study
Outpost – Hood River, Oregon | A Hub for Community, Creativity, and Connection

Introduction
The Vision: Merging Work and Play
Nestled in the evolving heart of Hood River, Oregon, Outpost stands as a beacon of modern placemaking—an innovative, phased development that harmoniously blends work, retail, and recreation in one dynamic environment.
More than just a building, Outpost was envisioned by Skylab Architecture as a layered social infrastructure—a space designed not only to house activities but to invite them. Whether grabbing coffee on the way to a co-working session, hosting a community event, or relaxing after a hike in the Columbia River Gorge, this structure welcomes people to connect, create, and recharge.
Built by Celilo Contracting Inc. and documented through the lens of Stephen A. Miller, this project expresses architectural boldness with a grounded, organic charm. The design respects the Pacific Northwest ethos—modern, modest, and deeply connected to nature.
Built for the Now—and the Next

A Community Anchor, Designed to Endure
Outpost is more than a building—it’s a platform for connection. Through thoughtful materiality and dynamic design, it becomes a natural extension of its surroundings, rooted in place but built for progress. With Sierra Pacific products at its core, the project stands as a model for how architecture can actively foster collaboration, sustainability, and a true sense of belonging.
At the core of Outpost‘s bold, modern aesthetic is the strategic use of Sierra Pacific windows and doors—elevating both function and form to support a vibrant, hybrid environment where work, recreation, and community intersect.
Fluid Boundaries, Dynamic Spaces
To create a campus-like environment that transitions effortlessly from indoor productivity to outdoor interaction, the project incorporates swinging doors, inswing entries, and expansive timber curtain walls. These elements dissolve traditional boundaries, inviting natural light, air, and community into every corner of the space.
The direct glaze window walls anchor the architecture, maximizing panoramic views while flooding interiors with daylight—reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating a more natural, human-centered atmosphere. Meanwhile, bronze-clad frames and Douglas fir interiors reflect a harmonious balance between industrial durability and warm, organic texture.
Whether hosting a neighborhood event, supporting small businesses, or simply offering a place to gather, Outpost thrives on flexibility—and the windows and doors are central to that adaptability.

Interior Experience: Urban Warmth Meets Northwest Character
Inside Outpost, the spirit of the Pacific Northwest comes alive in a space that fosters innovation, recreation, and togetherness. While its purpose spans retail, dining, and workspace, the interiors are anything but utilitarian—they’re vibrant, welcoming, and deeply attuned to their natural surroundings.
A Language of Materials: Natural Meets Industrial
- The interior design reflects the rugged beauty of Hood River with Douglas fir wood species, bronze accents, and exposed structural elements that blend contemporary lines with organic warmth. The timber curtain walls and direct glaze windows act as transparent canvases—framing mountain vistas and bathing communal areas in natural light.
- These elements create a visual and emotional continuity between interior and exterior, grounding the modern design in the character of its environment.
Communal Energy: Designed for Interaction
Whether inside a co-working space or gathered on the open-air patio, the building facilitates spontaneous connections and purposeful collaboration. Flexible interior layouts make room for everything from community events to quiet focus sessions—supported by inswing doors and swinging access points that keep the flow intuitive and barrier-free.
Large openings dissolve boundaries between interior lounges and the exterior plaza, encouraging movement, dialogue, and a shared experience of place.
Sustainability & Energy Efficiency
Outpost is as efficient as it is inspiring. At its core is a commitment to sustainability through Sierra Pacific’s high-performance window and door systems, which offer:
- Superior thermal performance for energy-conscious comfort.
- Durable clad exteriors in Bronze 024, designed to weather the elements while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
- Thoughtful ventilation and cross-breeze capabilities that reduce mechanical dependency.
These systems not only support daily function but align with long-term environmental stewardship.
More Than a Building: A Community Catalyst
Outpost isn’t just a destination—it’s a framework for connection. Every material choice, line of sight, and gathering zone has been designed to reflect and enhance the rhythms of Hood River life.
By combining refined industrial design with natural Northwest character, this project—led by Skylab Architecture and built by Ceilio Contracting Inc.—becomes more than architecture. It becomes a living part of the community’s story.
With Sierra Pacific’s expert-crafted windows and doors integrated throughout, Outpost stands as a model for how modern design can both serve and uplift the spirit of a place.

A Living, Breathing Landmark
Outpost redefines what commercial space can be. It’s not just about buildings—it’s about belonging. And through intentional design, regional materials, and high-performance windows and doors, this project has become more than a place—it’s become a pulse.
